Summer 2023

UF in Rome: Language and Culture

Frascati

I began my trip by spending a week in Frascati at my friend's family's home. During the time I made many new friends and wonderful memories. From visiting the Academy and learning about the "New Renaissance" artists, musicians, and writers were atttempting to celebrating at a friend's vineyard, I felt like part of the family. I shopped with my friend's aunt at the local markets and practice ordering at bars and restaurants in town. In their garden I began reading my first book in Italian, finally relaxing and feeling completely present in the moment. Although it was challenging to speak Italian at first, over time I grew comfortable with making mistakes and embraced the opportunity to grow.

Rome

Rome soon became my home for six weeks. I had a lovely routine that involved practicing my Italian at a local bar in the morning, observing the passerbys, and writing. My courses were incredible and often invovled adventures around the city. After class my friends and I enjoyed aperitivo and cards, going out, and eating lots and lots of gelato. Rome was the perfect home base, and every time I returned from an excursion, I felt a sense of belonging.

Florence

Florence was a life-changing adventure. I saw so many places I have always dreamed of visiting. The city's beauty was so that I felt compelled to capture this feeling in a poem, one that I wrote in my "secret" writing spot on the top of the American University of Rome.

Venice

I fell in love with the byzantine style of the Basilica Santa Maria della Salute. The mosaics were stunning. I ate traditional Venetian dishes and we celebrated a festival with fireworks and music. The gondola ride was so fun with my friends who had also dreamt of the (somewhat cheesy) ride. The multiple museums were exquisite. We also went to Burano and Murano.

Chianti

Our program took a trip to Chianti and it was truly a perfect day. The food was unbelievable, the wine was amazing and intereting to learn about, and the views were beautiful. I remember thinking I could be content there for a long time.

Sorrento

Sorrento was a wonderful place! My friends and I stayed in a hostel and got to explore the city in the day and at night. We had delicious lemon flavored desserts and spent most of our time at the beach.

 Capri

Capri was truly stunning. The water was the bluest water I have ever encountered. I enjoyed exploring the island with my friends and tanning by the shore! We ate incredible seafood and by this point in the trip, felt very comfortable ordering in Italian!

Milan

Milan was incredible. I would describe it as the New York of Italy, but smaller. The hustle and bustle of the city was a big change from some of the smaller more local areas we had visited. I did some shopping and we explored the city's beautiful architecture.
